When Hema was found in the streets of Washington D.C., her face and body were covered with scars and fresh bite wounds. It was obvious that she lived a tough life and had to fight regularly for survival. But when she was brought to the city shelter, the staff was surprised to meet one of the most gentle dogs that temporarily called their shelter home.
The sweet Pit Bull was beloved by the shelter staff, and it’s this sweetness that has brought her to her new home. From then on, she has lived as an inspiration and a great source of love for many.
New home
Marissa Clingen, along with her roommate Robin Sweegers decided one day to visit the local shelter. They had no intention of adopting any animal, they just wanted to have a look. And when they were walking along the kennels, one dog started putting her paws under the kennel gate, trying to reach out to them.
The duo stopped and crouched down. The dog then pushed her snout out and started nibbling on Marissa’s fingers. They were amazed at the dog’s eagerness to greet them that they asked for the dog to be taken out so that they could properly meet her.
The dog cuddled with them and gave out lots of kisses. It was more than enough for them to fill out the paperwork for her adoption. Their next stop was at a pet store to get a collar and a leash.
Hema is going to her new home.
Kitty foster
For the next three years, Marissa and Robin have fostered more than 20 cats and kittens. And through those years, and all those cats, Hema showed how much she loves them. She would always be around their fosters, kissing and cuddling them. She also patiently lie down as the kittens would play with her ears.
This attention and affection from Hema helped the kittens to socialize and learn how to be a house pet. This prepares them for the time when they finally move to their own permanent home. And thanks to a dog with a big heart, their transition would be easy.
