Charlie is a Catahoula mix, a breed known for its large size. But because his owners didn’t have time to take him on walks or get him to do any other form of exercise, he gained a lot of weight. When he became too large for them, they decided to surrender him to the local shelter. By that time, he was 35 pounds overweight.
The large dog was so out of shape that he panted very hard every time he took a walk. The shelter staff got very concerned when they first saw him do that, they thought he was having a seizure.
Nevertheless, the dog was so gentle and sweet that he captured everyone’s hearts. That is why it didn’t take long before he found a foster family.
Foster fail
After talking it over with her husband, Alaina Bupp, who frequently fosters rescue dogs, decided to take Charlie in. Their initial agreement was that the large dog would stay with them for a month. They were going to help him lose weight.
But when that month ended, Alaina decided to permanently adopt Charlie. She and her husband have grown very attached to the sweet dog. They said that there was something about the pooch that made them want his stay to last forever.
A huge source of comfort
As the couple started to foster more dogs, they noticed that their foster pups tended to drift towards Charlie. The rescue dogs were often scared when they arrive at their home, but with Charlie next to them, they released all their anxiety.
Charlie would be very sweet with the new fosters, often cuddling with them. The dogs feel safe with him around. He has become a crucial role player in their efforts to save these homeless creatures. The confidence that he gives those animals gives them a better opportunity to find their own forever family.
