We have all been coming across harsh and cruel behavior of humans against animals. Yet, not every twig has the same shape.
In Spring 2021, an animal rescue organization called San Diego Humane Society rescued two Shih Tzus who had their back paws tightly tied with bandages. The former owner claimed that he did it to avoid the dogs from scratching and licking their paw pads.
However, the blood supply in the bandaged legs had been cut off for a long time, ultimately requiring an amputation. One of the dogs, nine-year-old Chloe, was adopted soon after her paws were amputated. To help her recover, she was gifted orthopedic slippers and trained to walk using prosthetics and a wheelchair.
Meanwhile, the other dog named Roxy found it difficult to recover due to constant arthritis in her spine, which added more to her illness. Yet, the foster caretakers hope she would be ready for adoption once she’s a bit more stable. According to the shelter, it may take around a month for her.
After being nicely trained for prosthetics, Chloe had to stay in a foster home. Thankfully, her rescuers knew the perfect family for her.
Chappie Hunter is a police detective with a prosthetic leg. In 2013, he got into a car accident that cost him his leg. As he could relate to what Chloe had been through, the detective thought she was the perfect dog for his family.
To make sure that they can accompany Chloe for the rest of her life, the family underwent a trial adoption for a few weeks before officially adopting her. Now, Chappie and Chloe share a fascinating friendship and live happily.
Chloe’s story shows that it is never too late to find the right family for dogs like her. Hopefully, more people would be encouraged to adopt shelter dogs.
