Roberta Ingham of Nashua, New Hampshire was taking a walk when she heard an unusual noise. It sounded like a plea for help. She was so puzzled that she stood up to investigate. Her neighbor had indeed heard the same thing, so she knew she didn’t just imagine things in her head.
They followed the noise and discovered a woman and her dog trapped in the sewer. Because the woman kept calling for aid, Ingham quickly contacted the fire department.
On a walk, the dog got away from the woman and ran into a nearby shallow culvert. The woman had no choice but to follow in the hopes of saving her dog. She did, however, get too far into the pipe and were unable to escape.
Both the woman and her dog were terrified and unsettled by the situation. The water in the sewer was nearly too deep for the unfortunate pooch. The woman attempted to grip the dog by his harness, but he had to tread water to keep afloat.
Nashua Fire Rescue and EMTs came quickly after getting the call. The firefighters removed the manhole cover and lowered a ladder into the narrow space. First, a firefighter entered the culvert to get the dog out of the sewer. Then another firefighter arrived to assist the woman in climbing out.
Neighbors were curious and came out to see what was going on. They were taken aback when they witnessed a dog and a woman being rescued from the sewer.
Fortunately, both the woman and the dog are safe and sound. The woman was taken away in an ambulance because of cuts on her head, but she is now well. The dog was extremely anxious, but he was otherwise healthy. Ingham believes it is a miracle that both of them are alive.
